at first i anticipated getting my 3 year old a toddler bed. but then my office mate told me about this bed she had gotten her son and she ranted and raved on how sturdy the bed was. so i ventured out and purchased this bed and love it. its very girlie and very sturdy. the bed came with lots of screw and connectors but it was very user friendly to put the bed together. this bed is actually perfect for my 3 year old and she can grow into. it works well day bed style which is how i have it turned, because 1) the wall helps her from falling out of the bed and 2) its such a space saver turned that way considering her bedroom is not that big. as she gets older i plan to turn the bed long ways and add the headboard. i was curious if the scallop design on the end was on both ends of the bed, and yes it is so that helped because no matter which end of the bed is stuck out you will have the design at the end so that worked out great. i purchased a very sturdy twin mattres for the bed and i've laid on the bed it its so so sturdy and holds up very well. so if you wanted to lay in the bed with your child to help them off to sleep dont worry its strong enough to hold adults. i ABSOLUTELY LOVE the drawer space underneath. such a great space saver as well. i promise you will love! i say this is a great purchase for your toddler. dont waste your money on those toddler beds...im so glad i was told about this bed.
I ordered this bed with the expectation that it wouldn't be absolutely great due to the price. The old addage goes...you get what you pay for. That is so true here.
The first one that was shipped had a broken rail. Contacted South Shore Customer Service only to be told that they have no more rails manufactured and that they would be made sometime within the next 14 days. Seriously?!?!? I pointed out to them that I could have a whole new bed to my house in 2 days from Amazon Prime. They stood by what they said and would just say there was a 14 day lead time and then additional days for shipping. Does it occur to South Shore that if you have a bed available through Amazon (and Wal-mart) that there's a good shot you'll sell quite a few and that back stock would be a good idea.
Well the piece arrived and I started to put it together. We had also purchased the headboard and dresser to match. The quality standard is very low! The dresser drawers don't slide without lifting and pushing them in. It's unsteady and the premarked holes to sink screws into aren't level or plumb. The headboard is fine. It stands alone.
The bed went together but the piece over the top of the drawers is bowed!!! The drawers have a hard time fitting and I may cut them get some white particle board to just cover over it and make it decorative. The assembly is pretty straight forward, but it is the lowest quality kids bed I have ever seen. I also am unsure if the frame will hold up. We all tell our kids to stop jumping on the bed, inevitably they do it anyway, and I'm afraid this one could collapse.
Others have commented on the frame being longer than the bed. Yes, that is correct. About 4 inches on the end and 3 inches too wide on the sides. I haven't measured it, but you may be able to use a Twin XL matress, but it would still be too wide.
I looked at a Sauder brand bed the other day at a regional retail store we have in the upper Midwest. Sauder is not a great brand, but it far exceeds the quality of South Shore and the price point is very similar. The drawers moved smoothly and the bed felt much sturdier. I paid almost $500 for the whole set and am tempted to tear it apart and throw it out to the garbage, then go buy the comparalbe Sauder. I would not donate it because I'm not sure it's that safe.
Also, to give you an idea of me. I am not a licensed contractor, but have been doing construction on the side for over 15 years. We purchased a new house at the end of Sept 2012, and I took 2 months to go thru it and completely rebuild it. Short of a new frame and electrical work, I have changed everything in the new house. I know what I am doing and know what to expect.
I make numerous purchases from Amazon and have never been upset. This one absolutely stinks!

Poor quality materials and assembly components. I do not believe the support boards would hold an adult. Would have needed to purchase additional ssupports. Not worth the price. I returned it. The return policy however was excellent.

This is a solid, great bed. Definitely needs the matching head board. It took about 4-5 hours to unpack, understand the instructions, and assemble.
