We bought just the headboard and attached it to our generic metal bed frame, and it looks amazing. From afar, it looks just like the sample picture. Up close, it looks like steel painted over with black, then sand-blasted.
The vertical bars do not go all the way down to the floor--they are stopped by a horizontal bar, which I think is meant to align with the top of the mattress. It aligned perfectly with our bed, which has a total thickness of about 19 inches (mattress + low-profile box spring). But the headboard has multiple holes so you can adjust the height for your bed.
You can feel the bars if you sit up in the bed, but that is to be expected. If the headboard is touching the wall, it can mark it. I attached felt stickers (the kind you use to make cabinets close quieter) to the back of the headboard to prevent this, and it works well.
