TMS Corner Desk, Black

TMS Corner Desk, BlackI've read reviews on other sites claiming this desk is made of particle board. It isn't, it is actually made of solid wood. You can tell by looking at the end grain of the pieces, it is clearly real solid wood.

I like the desk, it is an attractive design and once assembled correctly, it is s nice looking and functional little corner desk with a classic look. I am giving four stars because mine exhibits some of the same things that others here are complaining about.

Mine arrived with one cosmetic blemish, it looks like a scrape mark or something along the edge of the top. Also, the drawer slide brace was cracked in a way that does not effect the form or function of the piece. My box had no damage, so I don't think this is happening as a result of improper handling during shipping. I think this is something going on at the factory that is causing these issues with damage.

The instructions did have one or two illustrations that were inverted, which caused a moment of confusion. But it was easy to figure out. I assembled it myself in about an hour and a half.

The dowels are either too short, or the dowel holes are drilled too deeply. When I put the dowels in, they go so far in that only a quarter of an inch or so is sticking out. So, you have to be careful about that. I also ran out of wood glue, as the tube that comes with the desk holds a laughably small amount. So I had to find my own adhesive after assembling half of the desk.

All that said, I still like the desk and for the money think it is still the best deal I've seen for a nice simple classic corner desk. I appreciate that it is solid wood, so I give them a pass on one or two dings.

Yes, the holes and screws and bolts don't always line up perfectly. But the instructions say not to tighten anything until the end. If you follow this instruction and leave all of your screws and bolts loose until the end, you should have no problem getting everything to line up. Once you get everything lined up and all of the screws and bolts started, it is easy to tighten them and bring the desk in to square.

The desk sits flat on the floor, and doesn't wobble. It feels solid. I wouldn't stand on it, though.

I would recommend this desk to a friend and if this one were lost or stolen I would probably replace it with the same desk.

I was very happy to find a small corner desk at such a low price. Having looked around a bit for a desk of this type I knew that things were going to be on the cheaper end. With my low expectations they still managed to disappoint me. I punched through the desks table top with a dowel when attaching the Drawer because the holes didn't line up and the table top was so thin. The directions were lazily compiled and difficult to follow. And once complete the corner desk still managed to be wobbly.

i read other reviews and maybe i just lucked out but there was no problem with this desk what so ever. pretty easy to put together and all the pieces came with no scratches or marks. works and looks great!

quick update: in order for the drawer to work properly for me i had to use the glue that came with and screw in the screws at an angle so they stayed put. i will update if need.. as of right now i a very happy with this purchase.

only reason that it 4 not 5 starts is the simple fact that i had to be a little creative to get the drawer to hold and function. the screws just wouldnt hold when i did it they way it was described in the directions.

This desk is perfect for the space. Looks cute and will meet my needs for a small writing desk (and maybe laptop use, but note that the drawer front does not drop-down). Not planning to put anything heavy on the shelf, so can't address its strength. Assembled alone; 60-something, fairly handy, female. Directions clear and were followed exactly. (Just my style.) Not difficult to assemble and everything seemed to line up appropriately, but do follow the instuctions NOT to tighten everything until the end. If you have trouble in the places where there are two bolts (e.g., one doesn't seem to line up), loosen both, and start the other one first ;-) The supplied Allen wrench is nicely-designed, but a little long for a couple of the bolt locations. I just used a shorter one of my own for those bolts.

The last assembly step is turn over the upside-down desk and mount the shelf that runs around the "inside," legs to legs. When I turned mine over, I was SO ticked to discover that one of the dowels that attaches the top to the base had broken thru the top, chipping off two pieces of the surface veneer, and leaving a defect about 1" x 2". To no avail, I made a dedicated and valiant effort to glue the pieces back into place.

While one reviewer unequivocally says this desk is built of wood, it is certainly NOT entirely built of wood, which became very evident when those missing pieces of veneer exposed the underlying surface. The top is particle board or some similar product. (Mind you, I didn't particularly care if it was wood or not, just sayin'.)

For now, there's a lamp over the defect. Maybe when I am feeling really ambitious, I'll fill the defect, sand it and paint the entire top. There is NO way I am willing to take it apart, pay to ship it back, and start over.
