Found this furniture and thought it was made in Vermont from solid woods and it is not. The company web site which we checked prior to finalizing on the choice to purchase the furniture seems to indicate a product with a long history of being built in Vermont from solid wood. The truth is the furniture came to our house in a box with made in China all over it. It is made from some type of particle board and is not real wood like the company seems to allude to on the web site. Stunned is the best word to describe how we felt when it was being unpacked. Now that it has been in the house for several weeks it is still giving off a odor that is enough to cause nausea. We have been leaving the window in the bedroom to try to get the smell to subside and it is really not ideal being that we also have the furnace running so the heat goes out the window with the smell.
We are very disappointed in the way the company portrays itself and the furniture is not what we would have bought had we been able to see it before buying. The only good thing out of this whole ordeal is that we didn't go ahead with buying the entire set and can replace this as soon as we find something made of real wood.
A final comment about the conversation I had with the woman at Bolton Furniture.
When a customer calls with concerns about the smell and quality of a product they should not be treated like they are crazy. When they tell you the web site is deceptive with all the wording about furniture made of hardwood it is probably because the web site is deceptive not because the customer is crazy.
This will be the last time we buy furniture made by this company. We ordered the Bolton Wakefield 7 drawer dresser and 5 drawer chest from Amazon. At first we were nervous about ordering such large furniture items from Amazon, but I have always been impressed with their customer service so I decided to give it a try. First, the prices on Amazon beat out the prices of all the other websites I checked out for the furniture. The furniture was shipped within a week (which is relatively a short time frame since most furniture stores take at least a month), and the customer service reps who called to schedule a delivery were very friendly. The gentleman who actually delivered it was careful in handling the box, and pointed out several rips (not big ones) so that we could check for damage.
But you probably want to read about the actual furniture! First of all, it came assembled, which I was not expecting. The piece looks gorgeous in person and of high quality, and at least for now, has a nice woody smell. It's made of nice solid wood. One thing to note is that the finish is lighter than in the picture-truly more of a honey color. If you search "Bolton Wakefield," the bookcase shown on Amazon more accurately represents the color. (We knew this before ordering, though the different colors for the dresser and chest were a bit confusing). Both units we ordered seem to have a decent capacity. We've only had the pieces for one day, so I can't speak much on how they'll wear and tear, but so far they're great! This is all wood with cedar lined drawers. Since the company was from New England, I expected an excellent American made chest. I wouldn't have paid so much for a chest made in China.
