I've been looking for quite a while for a simple, contemporary table that would easily fit into my mid-century modern office without being too overpowering, and without being a cheap and "disposable" piece of furniture. I am pretty picky when it comes to furniture and level of quality. I just happened to stumble across Manchester Wood and their products on the web and was intrigued. The company is U.S. based, in the NE, and produces furniture made from locally harvested woods, such as ash, oak, and cherry. Only U.S. based labor is used to manufacture the product. Plus, the company claimed that their furniture didn't use any MDF or other cheap materials, and that the construction was based solely on hardwood. So, everything seemed to be okay with the sole are of concern being that I had never heard of Manchester Wood as a company. So, I decided to take a chance and I purchased the Contemporary Square End Table in Chestnut. I am happy to say that it was a very smart purchase.
The table is extremely well packaged as a collapsed unit using only cardboard (recyclable) -no styrofoam. A minimal amount of user assembly is required, but it is extremely easy to do. All of the necessary parts were included (I always dread doing an inventory of parts only to find a few key items missing), and the hardware is of good quality. Upon opening the box, which is pretty heavy, you'll immediately notice the smell of -wait for it -real wood. Inspecting each piece, I was really pleased to see that the fit and finish of the wood was excellent -this particular table uses ash, which is a superb wood for furniture as it is dense, hard, and visually appealing. Uniform finish, perfectly shaped and sanded, and well crafted -you can tell it is going to be a nice table even before it leaves the box. After about 10 minutes of very simple assembly with a philips screwdriver and a small soft-headed mallet, the table was up and standing. It is very stable, doesn't wobble, looks great, and judging from how stout the assembly is, should provide (literally) a lifetime of service.
Though I had never heard of Manchester Wood, I can now say that I am quite impressed with the quality of construction and design of their product, and I think it represents an excellent value for the money -if you are in the market for a good, solid, beautiful piece of furniture that will last a lifetime. Plus, it is a U.S. made product from a U.S. based manufacturer, using U.S. sourced materials. Bravo!
I will soon be purchasing their oval coffee table in Chestnut and will also report on my experience with that product, too.
Definitely worthy of 5 stars. We ordered two of these tables, they arrived without damage, and look great. They do arrive unassembled and did take a little time to put together, as the wood was so hard it resisted use of a manual screwdriver, but overall a straightforward process and we were pleased with the wood quality and lovely grain. The color is reasonably accurate to the picture, it is a honey colored natural oak look. Please see product pictures I uploaded.
I did find they had a slight wood finish odor to them, but that is starting to disappear slowly over the past month.
