Coaster Legal/Letter File Filing Cabinet with Lock, 2-Drawer, Cherry Finish

Coaster Legal/Letter File Filing Cabinet with Lock, 2-Drawer, Cherry FinishI purchased the 2 drawer cabinets to serve as night tables in my bedroom. They are made of solid wood, not a veneer covering fiberboard. There is no assembly required and the bronze hardware is in place. The only effort that is demanded of you is to unpack them. And that is quite a job! Every effort has been made to protect these cabinets from damage: they are packed in a carton similar to the total packing for mail order furniture; that carton is within a larger carton, & 2-3" of space surrounding the interior carton has been filled with hardened foam.

I do wish that other finishes were available. Mahogany or walnut is easier to coordinate with other furniture.

If you are like me, I questioned the some assembly me be required statement on this product. Much to my surprise the cabinet came completely assembled out of the box. A nice perk indeed.

The file cabinet arrived intact and in great shape. When making the adjustment from letter size to legal size, the hanging file supports were to be removed. In doing so, the entire back of the drawer broke in half! Luckily I had some wood glue and glued it together. Now it is fine and sturdy.

The real wood parts are thin. The main skeleton of the cabinet is pressed wood. It is not high-end pressed wood. This is particle board. It can be seen as comparable to the piece of wood stained in the picture at wikipedia if you search for particle board.

The top unstained piece is somewhat denser than in this cabinet. Where the break occured, pieces are ready to fall out easily so it is not highly compressed or bonded.

The shipment received had a place on the box indicating something pushed it in a couple of inches. That was enough to break the pressed wood.

One rail was missing so one drawer is sort of useless until I find one or make one from similar metal stock. Update: I found the missing rail which fell out and laid along side the drawers sliding rail. However, the reason it fell out is the back was cracked and leaned far enough backwards to cause it do drop. The crack is the complete width of the back running along the grain of the wood. It is unusable in this condition until repaired as stated below.

The keys were in the lock which is bad. As one reviewer mentioned, scuffing occurred for that reviewer on the front drawer because of it. They should be inside a drawer in a plastic bag and attached there. Mine did not scuff however.

The flimsy back of the drawer is a real issue as it must support the rails which are merely mortised into the back. The back is solid wood (7/16 " thick), and it extends several inches above the sides of the drawer. There is no support for the top section which holds the metal hanging rails which are necessary for either letter or legal. You have a full size front to the drawer, 1/2 size sides, nearly full size back but with the top part unsupported. THIS is where the rail attaches. Any strong movement backwards, in my opinion, will either cause the folder rails to drop or break the back piece. It is flimsy. You can easily move the top part quite a distance without much pressure.

The appearance looks OK. I had expected it to be a little more substantial. Yes, it is not Ethan Allen furniture, but for about $300, I expected it to fill my need for a small cabinet in my office.

I am not returning it, however. I do not want to go through the hassel of repackaging this item as I basically destroyed the box removing it from the item. I can live with it. I will put a pine square frame in each drawer towards the back, glue and screw it to the existing wood, to give it sturdiness. I am repairing the back that was damaged with same clear pine product and the same method.

I wanted to like this a little better, but it does not present as well as it advertises.

While the cabinet arrived well wrapped the keys, left in the lock, scraped two quarter moons gashes on the front top panel. This is because the one of the keys (set of two) moved during transit. The keys should have been placed in a small plastic bag and taped inside the drawer or could have been covered with thick protective material if left in the lock during transet.

The result is two deeply imbedded scrapes in the wood on the front of the cabinet (which was totally unnessecary).

I would return the cabinet, but don't want to go to the trouble of shipping it back. I will have to use a wood filler to fix the gashes in the wood. This is very disappointing.
