Bayside Futon Mattress

I bought this along with a mostly build-it-yourself wooden futon frame, and am very pleased with both.

The things that please me about this mattress include:

1. Made in USA

2. Very firm

3. Reasonable price in the hundred and a half range

My only complaint is that it comes wrapped tightly in plastic, sort of like a carpet roll, and once you tear into it, the "factory fresh" smell will bowl you over. If you're at all sensitive. This mattress needs a few days in the sun to air out before it's tolerable to mortals, and even then a good cover should be used with it to reduce the volatile odors from coming out.

I'm not sure what they made it out of, but it's definitely not flowers and sunshine. If you have asthma or other sensitivities to odor, be sure to give this plenty of time in the sun and wind before you will find it possible to sleep on.

After 2-3 weeks, the odors are minimal, and it is an excellent mattress. The cover is cotton, and looks like it would easily take on stains, so it might be wise to look for a good protector for it. I haven't found one yet, so if anyone knows of one, please let me know in the comments.

I wanted a firm mattress and this one certainly is. The shipping was bang on time and neatly packed. I got 2 of them and I am liking it. No problems of back pain or whatsover.

We purhased this to replace an old futon mattress in our downstairs guest room that was getting lumpy. When we first received and unpackaged, we were a bit disappointed by how thin the mattress looks. After going back and saw it is a 5" mattress, we realized it was our fault and that we would just deal with it rather than mess with returning it. We occasionally sleep in the guest room when our un-air conditioned home gets too hot in the summer. Alone, it is pretty firm. We purchased a 3" memory foam mattress topper to put on top of it because it was too firm for us. Now we sleep on it almost every night despite having recently purchased a pricey mattress for the master bedroom and despite that it has been cool enough to sleep upstairs. Bottom line: if you like firm, you are probably okay -particularly for the price. If you prefer something slightly softer, this is not what you want unless you are willing to spend another $150 or more on a good topper. We spent $300 between the mattress and the topper. Probably could have bought a better mattress for less money.

The futon came very quickly! Another person who reviewed stated that it had an odor. We did not notice an odor. I think this was a good value for the money. I think this will hold up a long time. My son is very happy with it. We love it!
