South Shore Sweet Morning Collection 4-Drawer Chest, Royal Cherry

South Shore Sweet Morning Collection 4-Drawer Chest, Royal CherryThis fine little dresser is heavythe specifics say it weighs 83 pounds. The UPS guy left the large box outside as I wasn't home when he delivered it. I am an old lady and I had a great deal of trouble moving it through the front door into the hall where it sat until I could grab a couple of guys to move it and later put it together. So if you are a lady alone you'll need some male horsepower on tap. The box and parts inside arrived in perfect shape with no scratches or dents anywhere.

The assembly requires an experienced personactually two experienced persons. Tools needed are a Phillips screwdriver and a hammer. The directions are straight forward but there again an inexperienced assembly individual may have some difficulty following the directions, an assembly-inept person such as me would have a real problem.

Two guys working in tandem put the dresser together in an hour and a half one guy holding the part, the other guy applying the screws. The assemblers had no criticism of the directions or the way the holes lined up, allowing easy insertion of the screws. The Amazon description of the chest recommends two people do the assembly, and although the two former reviewers intrepidly put the unit together by themselves, two persons make the assembly much easier.

The dresser is nice-looking in dark cherry, but as other reviewers have remarked, the surface is vulnerable to scratches. A cosmetic touch up pen is included. I intend to use the dresser in the kitchen for various items as my drawer space there is limited. It would also work well in a tool shop. Of course, it is intended for children, but I would suggest an older child, not a toddler. The chest is handsome, even though the wood is laminated particle board. The four drawers slide in and out smoothly and all told, this is a nice piece of furniturein fact I am rather proud of it!

Directions on this item are next to impossible but the quality isn't bad for the price. Color is close to accurate. Mixed in well with my Shermag cherry glider and 'chocolate' Delta crib.

It's a dresser and the dimensions are right there above, so not a lot to say about what it does or how big it is. So here are the main pertinent points:

Arrival Shape

It arrived in mostly decent shape, though I was somewhat disappointed that it had a few dings and nicks. Nothing terrible or even unsightly, but they were noticeable

Assembly

Took about two hours total.

Most of it is a one-person job, but you definitely want two people for a few assembly points.

A phillips screwdriver and a hammer are all you need

Instructions were almost uniformly clear and easy-to-follow. Once or twice I had to pause a moment to figure out just what the diagram was telling me, but never for long and nothing presented itself as anything but a momentary obstacle

Everything fit well. Holes were lined up, screws went in easily, etc. Not always the case in past assembly situations. It was actually a pleasant surprise how well lined up everything was

I recommend keeping a few of the styrofoam rectangles handy. I used them to prop up parts now and then that were only attached at one end so as not to put undue stress on wood or connections

No swear words in the two hours at all--always a plus

Finished product

It feels quite solid for its materials

Drawers slide easily in and out

It looks quite nice. Really. Quite nice.

My one caveat for appearance and quality is that the surface laminate mars easily. I'd be very hesitant to put this in a young kid's room (older kid would be fine) as it does nick and scratch somewhat easily. And I might consider a cloth laid on top so coins, keys, etc. don't scratch it up.

That said, it does come with a touch-up pen that performed, I have to say, remarkably well. Is it a great solution? No. But is it an effective one? Surprisingly so. A few minutes and I couldn't see any of the scratches/nicks I'd noticed before. Don't lose that pen!

We'll have to see how durable it is over time, but save for the concerns about scratches/marring, it's an easily-assembled, seemingly sturdy, and very nice looking piece.

This four drawer chest is an average size, dark cherry color assemble-at-home dresser. I have purchased and put furniture like this together before, so my review is based on some experience.

First, it took me two full hours to assemble (with just a little help from my wife). All I needed was a hammer and a few common screwdrivers. FYI, it was made in Canada and has a five year warranty.

Second, some PROS and CONS

PROS:

-The instructions were clear and easy to follow.

-The unit is solid not as cheaply made as something you'd get at Wal-Mart or Target.

-It is nice looking.

-The size is perfect for our eight year old's room.

CONS:

-The drawer slides and other parts are plastic; not sure how long they will hold up.

-The laminate finish is not overly durable; kids' toys would probably scratch it quite easily.

-As with most "assemble at home" furniture, the holes didn't perfectly line up (though it wasn't a big deal).

In summary, this is a sturdy, assemble at home particle-board dresser. It is better than other ones I've run across in the past. Though I don't know how long it will hold up, my wife and I both very much like it and would recommend it.
