I was a little hesitate to purchase this over the internet for a couple of reasons: the first is that Amazon on the day I purchased the bed had no picture (I had to goggle it), they now have a picture, the other is that the price was so cheap, I was worried that the bed was not going to be sturdy. To my surprise, this bed is very study and heavy. The only con is that it took hours to put together. My daughter loves her bed. I also received it VERY FAST, within 5 days. I am very pleasedIt's exactly what I expected. the only downside to it was the assembly. It was pretty hard to do by myself and initially when you look at all the pieces and the directions it can be overwhelming. But I didn't knock down the rating for it because the directions do suggest using two people and the fact that one person can build within several hours is okay. Anyway its a very sturdy bed and the kids love having a "couch" in their room.Buy Dorel Home Products Twin-Over-Full Futon Bunk Bed Now
We bought this bunk bed for my step daughter's 12th birthday and after it was delivered promptly (our typical Amazon experience), we put it together in one miserable night. And miserable was right the smaller pieces of hardware (bolts, nuts, etc.) aren't labeled, the diagrams aren't labeled, and assembly in general was frustrating and annoying and this is coming from two quite handy and rather tough adults. The biggest problem was with the futon mechanism, which is so stiff and uncooperative that we put it on (correctly), but couldn't get it into any position other than flat (bed position), or a vertical "V" shape that no human could sit on i don't think even the cats would like it. So we thought we were wrong, so we removed it, flipped them, and tried again again this time we couldn't get it into any other position. Finally one of us (who will remain unrevealed) got so annoyed that the bed was hit and pop! right into couch position, unfortunately facing the wrong flipping way. So one more unand re-assembly, and some incredibly stiff transitions and assembly was finally finished. Since that time she's been sleeping on it, but prefers the lower portion by-and-large its a bit shaky when she climbs up, which is disconcerting, and the rungs to the ladder are perfectly round metal bars, so they're slippery. Also there's no gap at the top of the ladder to make flopping into the bunk easier. Otherwise, its alright on a tight budget, its do-able, but you might want to bear in mind that it is cheap quality, and we don't expect it to last more than a few years. Since that's really all we need it for, we're ok with that, but don't think you're investing in quality or you'll be disappointed.Read Best Reviews of Dorel Home Products Twin-Over-Full Futon Bunk Bed Here
This is definitely a worthwhile bed/system. It's comparable to items I've observed in stores for almost twice the price. Assembly is time consuming, but not difficult. I would advise anyone to re-read each direction a couple of times prior to taking the actions. The directions lead you in the right direction, but aren't always descriptive enough. There was one instance in which I had to disassemble and reassemble a portion because the directions weren't clear. The bed itself is sturdy. The futon mechanisms work perfectly. It's constructed out of a medium-gauge steel, but appears to be designed very well. Some of the holes are misaligned, but "correct" easily with a few strikes from a trusty mallet. Be prepared: EVERY bit of this bed requires assembly. It arrives in a long, slender box. I'd estimate the total weight to be 150lbs. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something similar.Want Dorel Home Products Twin-Over-Full Futon Bunk Bed Discount?
PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR 10/2012 UPDATE!i ordered this for my son.. before we moved he had a bed similar to this one (futon bunk bed). i really liked how it saved space during the day and made it super easy for him to play games or watch movies.
anywho.. i lugged this 150 lb bed up 2 flights of stairs.. started putting it together.. and couldnt even get past the 1st step. there are supposed to be 4 long rail posts labeled a, b, c, d. i got a, b, d, d. so now im stuck waiting for a replacement part to show up. it says it could take 7-14 business days. i usually am not bothered by stuff like this (i know human error will always be an issue, so i generally let it slide), but 7-14 days?! now my sons bedroom is a wreck because he has a deconstructed bunk bed propped against every wall and corner of his room. its been 6 days since ive put in for my replacement parts and i still havent heard anything from them.
also.. one of the short rail posts had a huge dent in it right by the drilled holes, so it made the long rail post crooked when i screwed them together. so i had to request a replacement for the short rail as well.
i really hope this bed looks like a god damn masterpiece once i finally get the parts i need. i have the worst luck with ordering things online! ;)
UPDATE 10/2012:
The replacement parts arrived 2 weeks after I put in the request for them. They actually sent me 2 of the short rails (the dented piece) which was nice, but the other one I originally got was fine.
The bed has been together for awhile now. I pretty much put it together by myself (my sister helped a little). Doing it by yourself is very time consuming, FYI. It took me 2 days (3 hours the first day and 2 hours the 2nd) because the first 3 hours were completely exhausting lol. The bed is incredibly sturdy!! I am glad I bought this bed. I made a mistake though, and ordered a futon with springs in it, so it is very difficult to put in the futon position. That is my fault though, it has nothing to do with the futon mechanisms (the mechanisms actually move very fluidly. I played with them a lot after building the bed, because the last futon bunk bed my son had had very stiff mechanisms). My son really likes it, says its very comfortable. :)
The thing I like the most is that if we move, we can deconstruct it easily, in big pieces. We won't need to take every piece apart and rebuild it from scratch. The futon mechanisms can stay attached to the sides, the bed slats don't have to be removed, etc. This makes me happy because putting it together took so long the first time!
Changed the rating from 3 stars to 4 stars.
