I would recommend buyers purchase their own painting tools. These items are relatively inexpensive, and the ones that come in the kit aren't that great. I spent about 5-10 bucks on painting tools, and it was well worth it. The acrylic paint is what gets you, in terms of cost, anyways. I probably spent about 100 bucks on paint, maybe more.
The stencils begin losing a lot of their sticky after about 8-10 applications. So for the grass, picket fence, and other stencils you will use repeatedly, use them in high priority areas first.
The stencils still work very well on texturized walls.
If you are painting the room a base color, I would wait several days before using the stencils. The paint may otherwise lift up. The instructions say that you can also sprinkle some baby powder on the stencils to make them less sticky (which supposedly lessens the risk of lifting the paint underneath). I was paranoid so I tried this, and it was a waste of a stencil. It lost it's sticky almost entirely, and was not at all necessary. Luckily it was a stencil I only needed to use once.
It's tempting to add the butterflies, birds, bugs, etc. in the beginning, but I would recommend waiting until your tree, flowers, fence, grass, and other big items are painted.
I painted the flowers on the tree three difference colors, and it didn't look so good. Not awful, but not great. Now the stencil has lost it's sticky, so I am going back now and hand-painting all of the flowers the same color.
For fun I also purchased some glitter paint (clear paint with some sparkles in it). This was a nice touch on the bees wings, and other places that could use some uumph.
Very fun activity. So glad I bought it!Before reviewing the product I must mention that one of the pictures for the product appears to be inaccurate. You will notice that the picture with the brushes shows 5 bristle brushes included. None were received. All the brushes in the package were foam brushes. Luckily we had our own bristle brushes, because the detailed work is difficult with the foam ones. We hit a local art supply store and spent about $60 on acrylic paints of assorted colors, and picked up a quart of satin white from sherwin williams. We used styrafoam plates to blend colors.
This stencil kit is a great idea to decorate a nursery or young girl's room. You'll runout of space before you run out of ideas on how to use them. Once we were done with the room we realized we still had six we had not gotten to yet.
A couple of tips when using these. We placed these on walls that were "knock down" textured walls. Applying the stencils on knock down is tricky, as the paint will escape the confines of the stencil if you use too much. Flat walls would undoubtedly be easier. We cured this by painting in from the edges and not towards them. Also, you should give each stencil about 10 minutes to dry before reapplying. We found that trying to immediately reuse one would cause paint splatters on the wall when reapplying.
When pulling them, off do so slowly in one direction. We found this method prevented most imperfections.
We enjoyed decorating our first daughter's nursery with this product.I first fell in love with this stencil set, but my older (4 year old) daughter really wanted princesses. So I got her the princess set made by the same maker, and got this one for her little sister (15 months). I did the princesses first (as the elder daughter was more persistant) and they worked awesome. I just started work on the garden, and the stencils are not as high-quality. they are a very cute design, and I am making them work, but am experiencing a lot more leakage behind the stencils despite how carefully I press them, they don't stick as well and are more likely to shift during the stencil process. The backing paper they come on is yellow and very thin (says "made in china"), causing it to tear as you are trying to remove it, whereas the other stencil I used previously was on thick white paper like contact paper, that allowed you to remove the paper in one peice and easily put the stencil back on the paper when you aren't using it (which is really helpful for frequently used items like picket fences and grass or tree flowers). However, with these stencils you are left with nowhere to stick the sticker when it is not in use, and the stickers have pulled the paint off the wall in places, or have fallen down (sticking to themselves quite firmly)when I was laying out the room. I am dissapointed!I purchased the jungle version of this kit. First, let me say that the video they produced to guide you says you can do all this in a weekend. NOT! Especially if you have anything else to do like laundry, eat a meal or watch a toddler. The instructions are GREAT but three weekends later I am still not finished.
Also of note if you have 'orange peel' walls, the stencils really don't stick very well which makes the painting process take way more time that if you had a flat surface to stick to. It also means that the edges of your characters will not be nice and smooth...because your wall is not nice and smooth. This means you have to do a lot of touch up painting when you finish with all the stenciling.
Although it seems like a deal that they supply the brushes when you purchase directly from their site, the sponges just don't work as well as real bristle brushes and again it takes you a while to figure that out so that increase the amount of time it takes to do the painting.
Overall, I LOVE how may son's new paint job looks he even helped on a couple of pieces of it and he is 6. However, don't think it will be done in one weekend. We had to take everything out of his room and it has been sitting in my office now for almost a month. Inconvenient to say the least.
I did however, rate this at 4 stars as these are all minor compared to the cool room my son now has! Just be forewarned to schedule a good deal of time to make it happen.I just finished my daughters room and it came out terrific. Love this product and highly recommend it. Very easy to use.
