My fiance and I work night shift at a Walmart, and I was often kept awake by the bright light in the room during the day. Even with a light blocking curtain, light got in over the top, over the curtain rod. The Shiftshade isn't an entirely perfect light seal, but it's much better than a normal curtain. I suspect that if it was pinned or stapled into place instead of using the included fiberglass rods, the seal would be better. The fabric itself is great though; in places the fabric covers, it's dark as night. Love the product!Starting with the negative: installation is horrible. They really need to come up with a better way to install this fabric. Maybe they should contact companies that make blackout drapes and sell this technology to them so that it could be pre-sewn onto drapes. Anyhow, I didn't bother with the rods. I was prepared to be inventive with installing these since I had read many reviews. So, All I did was measure the window and cut it about 2 inches bigger; I then used push pins to install it. Another good idea would be to sew a pocket and use a tension rod to install it. I don't have a sewing machine or I would have probably done that. Another thing I wasn't happy about is that it says it covers a window that is 38x72, so I ordered two of these. I come to find out the seller includes extra fabric (which is really nice actually), but it would have been nice to know the exact dimensions of the fabric since people install it differently and in the end, I only needed one order of this to cover two windows.
Okay, now for the positive: this stuff truly works. I have purchased blackout drapes two times in the past. The most recent blackout thermal drapes that my toddler & preschooler have do not help in the least bit. Both kids have east-facing windows, so when the sun comes up, their room is bright and hot. The morning after I installed these, I could immediately tell a difference in the temperature of their rooms. And their room is pitch black! I personally love that because it's easier for them to nap during the day as well. So, yes: this helps keep out the light and heat; I'm sure it'll also work to keep out some of the winter cold as well.
Overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for blackout drapes or shades.Shipping was fast and the product does indeed block light. I bought the shade because I wanted to sleep later on the weekends. I didn't install it the normal way. I have 2 34"-35" windows in my bedroom so I cut the material in half and created two 36" wide by 38" long sheets. I folded down about 2" and sewed a pocket on each sheet. I screwed in two coffee cup hooks into the molding at the top of my windows (under my toppers so they aren't visible), put the rods through the pockets and hung the sheets in the hooks over my mini-blinds. I can remove them very easily. I can still see a sliver of light on the sides but my room is darkened significantly. Very happy! This is a simple yet very effective sun shade. It is unique in that it can block out all the light, even around the edges. I put it up in my 2.5 year old's nursery and it completely blacks out the room...now she sleeps longer in the morning and at nap time. There is not a hint of light coming though or around this thing. I installed it by myself without any help in about 10 minutes including pulling down the blinds (not required but easier), cutting the rods to length (easy to cut with a hacksaw, dremel, etc), installing it, and replacing the blinds. You cannot even tell from the inside that it is behind the blinds. From the outside, it looks similar to my white blinds that were there. If I had to pull it down, it would take probably 10 seconds. If I had to put it back up, it would probably take about a minute or two. I plan on leaving mine up permenantly. One cool thing about this, is the thick, white fabric will block/reflect thermal energy, saving on electricty bills. In addition, there is no hardware to install meaning the walls and window frame remain as they did prior to the install. Very impressed! It's basically window blind material with some fiberglass rods that you use to seal the material against the window. Reading another review gave me the idea to put it up with push pins, and had I known that you can get the blind material by the yard from Shift Shade, then I could've saved myself some money. If you're considering using the push pin method for convenience or a better light seal, by all means go to their website, get the material by the yard and save a few bucks.
I live in Los Angeles in a tiny apartment with a south-facing kitchen window. With the shade up over the summer, I found that I could avoid using the A/C until around 6:00 p.m., and then only run it an hour or two to cool off. Without the shade, I'd have to start the A/C around 11:00 a.m. and leave it on all day! That's a huge difference. It also works to keep the place warmer in autumn/winter, but I took it down as soon as it cooled off because it blocks light really well. It's like living in a cave, and in the winter I like all the light I can get.
