Monterey Cubbie Bench

The quality of this product is LOUSY. It is particle board covered with contact paper. The contact paper has bubbles in it and is peeling.

We needed an entryway bench, and I was thrilled to find this simple unobtrusive one on Amazon for such a reasonable price. We don't really have an entry hallway, but this bench fits neatly behind our large L-shaped sofa, giving us a place to take off our shoes and store bags & gear for the day.

INSTALLATION: The pieces were well packed with some heavy duty foam around the edges to protect during shipping. The instructions were diagram only and could have been a little more detailed in sections, but not that bad overall. It came with some interesting nuts & bolts that made it a breeze to put together solidly. I'm a petite woman and while juggling a baby, it took me less than forty minutes to set up.

USE: I have the black one and it shows dust and cat hair pretty easily, but also wipes down quickly to clean. The cubby holes are a decent size, big enough to hold a small backpack, or two pairs of shoes side by side. The whole feel is pretty sturdy and I'd buy this brand, Prepac, again in the future.

This product was what I expected. It's not fancy, lots of veneers, and the set-up ended with one of the dowels breaking off. However, I've glued what I could to make it sturdy. It looks fine and what I expected. I'm happy with the purchase for the price. It looks just as it does in the picture, color, too.

Sturdy bench that fits the bill. If you are looking for something inexpensive to serve both as a bench to sit on and a little storage space, this works. We bought this to put in our attached garage and serve as a place to remove your outdoor shoes and put on your indoor shoes, or vise versa, when entering or leaving the house. It works fine for that purpose. As you would expect, at this price, this is not a great piece of furniture. It's all particle board with a thin photo finish that resembles wood. It's easy to assemble and passes the 10 foot test with no problem. It easily supports a two hundred pound person and can store three pairs of shoes, boots or slippers; more if you want to use all the space. I would recommend it if you are looking for utility at a low price. If it's furniture you're looking for, this is not it.

The item was packaged very well and from the packaging I would think that it is unlikely to be damaged during shipping. However, the product itself was missing large areas of the black paint/enamel coating on the compressed wood and there were numerous scratches on the pieces that were completely painted. There were also a lot of streaks from glue or some other sticky substance on the black paint/enamel.

Perhaps I simply received a "bad" product, but the whole item seems a bit "cheap" to me. The backing of this bench is a piece of painted cardboard, which is not a material that I usually associate with furniture. Others have said that the bench seems sturdy, but I do not think that it would last more than a year or two, as we intended to use it as a bench at our front door to sit on while removing shoes. If the backing was a solid piece of wood then it would strengthen it greatly, but the cardboard does not give me a lot of confidence in it's sturdiness. Therefore I returned the damaged bench immediately with no plans to order a replacement. If you are going to use this item at the foot of your bed it will likely be a great purchase, provided you don't receive a damaged product.
