South Shore Flexible Collection Headboard, Full/Queen, Black Oak

South Shore Flexible Collection Headboard, Full/Queen, Black OakThis is what I call an ornamental headboard, looks great next to other pieces. Make sure to attach it well against the wall. Looks good, feels bit week if not installed properly...

This item is 100% particle board. There is not a single piece of actual wood or even plywood included. Not only is this stuff weak and dimensionally unstable, it's loaded with adhesives and chemicals. No good for the environment at large, or the environment in our house. It's been unpacked for almost a week and it still stinks of chemicals.

In addition to the low-budget materials, Southshore's quality control definitely comes up short. On one critical piece, they included two right hand units and no lefts, so it wouldnt go together without my drilling a matching set of holes on the opposite side. Naturally it wasnt as precise as the factory hole, so the whole thing is a bit off now. Yes, I could have called customer service, had a new part shipped from Canada, and had the whole project sitting half assembled in the bedroom for a week, but thats clearly unacceptable.

Other problems:

Dowel pin holes drilled too deep, so there is only a tiny bit sticking out to support the mating piece.

The cam locks are extremely low quality steel, at least half of them stripped during the initial assembly.

The painted pieces have at least one unfinished edge each, usually the edge that faces the floor. These will almost certainly chip and look terrible over time.

The "matching' bed has no direct interface to the headboard. You just have to screw through the face of the particle board and into the bed. The connection is weak and floppy, and since it's all particle board, will likely fail in short order.

The old saw says "you get what you pay for", but in this case, you don't. This unit is the same price as a solid wood unit from Ikea, which will last for years and wont off-gas a ton of noxious chemicals into your bed.

NOT recommended!!!

This headboard was inexpensive, delivered quickly, and easy to assemble. My one qualm with it is that it did not include nuts, bolts and washers to attach to a standard metal bedframe. It included screws that would allow you to attach it to the regular bedframe it's paired with, but if you're buying just the headboard, wouldn't it make sense to include hardware for both options? It defeats part of the purpose of ordering online if you have to go to the hardware store to buy pieces to complete the project.

Overall it's a great product and only missed out on this one crucial piece.
