South Shore Axess Collection 5-Shelf Bookcase

I was happy enough with the shelves when they arrived-they were as expected, cheap but what I needed shelving-wise. Immediately after being assembled the shelf tilted a little to the right. I un-assembled and reassembled the self to be sure it was all done correctly. Still, the shelf leaned. The leaning was not too severe so I let it be. Last night the shelf came crashing to the ground at 2am. It is beyond repair.

The bookshelf looks nice and the assembly is easy enough, but it is made of that wood compsite material (i.e. CHEAP), and the back is mere cardboard (i.e. CHEAP). I recieved this bookshelf less than a month ago and already one of the shelves is bowed under the weight of books (i.e. CHEAP). I dont think it would be too much to ask that a BOOKSHELF be stong enough to support the weight of BOOKS. I am unhappy with this purchase and wish I could return it.

I spent a few months shopping around for a new tall bookcase before finally settling on this one. It's a pretty good price for it's size and quality (look up a short, folding bookcase and they'll run at the same price). It's a no-brainer that takes no more than 30 mins. to assemble. The only drawback is that it doesn't come with wall anchors. While it's pretty sound, anchors are an especially nice feature when you have crazy whirlwind kids around who like to climb furniture. It's an all-around great buy that is well worth the price.

We bought two of these bookcases about a year ago, and it's been a disappointment from the start. We bought these to house our rather extensive book collection, and within months, the cheap, particleboard shelves were bowing heavily. We did not over-stuff the shelves either, we only put the amount of books that fit on each. Along with the bowing, the peg holes ended up wearing out on the bottom from the weight and caused shelves to come crashing down. This also caused the cardboard backing to come off the back.

If you are buying this product more for displaying light weight decorative items and a few (note: VERY few) books, go ahead and go for it, but if you are considering buying this as a serious book collector, save yourself the disappointment, frustration, and money and get yourself something that will last. It's really a sad, sorry state of affairs when a BOOKcase isn't even made well enough to be able to handle holding BOOKS. There are two words for this product: planned obsolescence.

This book shelf was easy to assemble. Although I had a partner to help, I could have done it myself. It looks fabulous in my living room and is roomy enough to hold books and display pottery intermittently. My only complaint is that one of the side pieces came badly damaged and needed to be replaced. The side piece was not damaged in shipping and was obviously packaged that way from the warehouse. Customer service was lovely and sent a replacement, but I had to wait about 2 wks for it to arrive. Overall great deal in spite of that.
