You will want to be careful with this desk. I searched for "Solid wood desk", and this one came up, even with the words "Solid Wood" in the name. It is not solid wood. Maybe it has very thin veneers on the areas that show, but this is most definitely not solid wood. Of course, for the price, I should have known. You cannot even use an electric screwdriver because it will strip the "wood", which is actually very hard cardboard. Even with a hand screwdriver you have to be very careful not to tighten the screws too much, and I am not a big strong guy either.

Also, it has one drawer (could tell from the picture and description) which is not well designed for assembly. I had to use a tool knife to carve grooves on the "wood" (cardboard) so the hinges could fit the way they were supposed to. Here is when I noticed there was no solid wood to the desk, except, like I said, maybe on the super thin veneers, and only on the areas that show.

I am not one to write reviews much, but I though all of you thinking of buying this should know.

Now, the good side:

I did not return this because it does look very pretty and elegant, just like the picture, and I considered the blatant LIE about the material a sunk cost. I would have given it NO stars... but oh well. The hutch is very handy to organize books, notebooks, pens, mail, small objects, and still give you plenty of space for open books and notes. Mind you, it is not large, so if you are the "I-love-to-spread-my-stuff-all-over-the-dining-room-table" type, this might be too small.

Apart from the carving of the hinge grooves, it was simple to assemble, with clear drawings and instructions. It even comes with a brown marker in case you scratch it, which I did even before I was done assembling. Perfect for a small home office to push against the wall, and if you take the hutch off, can even go in the middle of the room.

In a nutshell: They lie about the material, but it does look very nice.

I've assembled my share of furniture and I've never had a product go together so easily as with this one. Every piece was securely packaged, all the pieces were labeled, and each different piece of hardware was sorted into individually labeled bags. The screw holes all lined up, and I put the whole thing together with a manual screwdriver in about two hours by myself. It looks fantastic and is very sturdy.

The hutch does not attach to the desk, it just sits on top, but it has non-skid feet so it stays in place. Also, the slide out keyboard tray also works as a drawer for supplies. You have to unlatch it to serve as a keyboard tray, so if you are just using a laptop, you have lots of extra storage space.

I spent hours searching for a desk to fit a certain space. I spent two hours unpacking, dusting off all the little bits of Styrofoam and fibers from the wrapping, and assembling the desk. The final step was to put the drawer/keyboard tray into the track in the desk...that's when disaster struck. I pushed the drawer in, but the motion was not smooth. I verified that the tracks were lined up, pulled the drawer out and pushed it in again. That's when a piece of metal and several tiny ball bearings popped out of the track (that was already attached to the desk by the manufacturer). I have put together multiple things in my life, and this was the first time that anything like this has ever happened.

I then called Amazon customer service who assisted me in returning the desk for a refund. I noted to him that the desk came in two boxes (one for desk and one for the hutch). He thanked me for letting him know. Apparently that doesn't mean that he understood what I said, because he only submitted one return label to UPS. So UPS came and only took one of the boxes. I then had to waste more of my time on the phone again with Amazon customer service, and wait on hold as the rep made notes about all of this on the order. I have now been instructed to call Amazon (a third time!) when I receive an email confirming the return, because they will then have to manually issue me a refund. I'd like to know how much Amazon pays their reps so that I can send them a bill for my time! I bet it still wouldn't be worth all this aggravation!
