Newport Simple Platform Bed

Received quite a different quality product than the one advertised by this seller for my money. I have cut and pasted the following product description from the Seller's (Cymax) product description of this Modus Nevis Queen Size Simple Platform Bed, Espresso, on Amazon:

Constructed from Tropical Mahogany solid wood ( 2 Stickers on 2 sides of the bed both state it is "composite wood", not solid Mahogany wood)

12 solid wood slats for use with or without a box spring ( I received 12 "plywood" slats, not solid wood slats as advertised)

Bed looks nice, but I did have to make 2 additional supports for the plywood slats they sent me to make sure they can adequately support 2 adults and a memory foam mattress with no issues. Additionally, several of the plywood slats had cracks in them. This bed is not worth the price for low quality plywood and composite wood. It's simply not right to ask buyers here on Amazon to pay for products with certain stated features, and then receive products which do not have those stated features from the seller of the product. Don't believe I'll be had again by Cymax, lesson learned; only by products "Amazon" sells or fulfills.

I've seen some confusion surrounding this bed (and other similar models) here and elsewere. I've just purchased and assembled it, and have been using it for about 2 weeks. My impressions:

The bed is very sturdy. I don't see this falling apart any time soon. It's also solid wood, which is more than you can ask of so many other platform beds in this price range.

It does not come with what you or I would think of as a headboard or footboard. The headboard and footboard listed in the description are the portions of the frame that go at the head and foot of the bed. Some people have complained about this if there's any confusion, check the product images. One is a picture of only the completed bed no mattress, no sheets, nothing. That's exactly what comes with this purchase.

The slats are spaced too far apart for use by themselves with memory foam. You can put some cardboard or thin plywood over them, creating the solid surface required for memory foam.

14 inches high DOES NOT MEAN THE MATTRESS WILL BE 14 INCHES OFF THE GROUND. This one got me. It's not quite 14 inches tall, and the slats sit a good 4.5 inches down into the frame, meaning that your mattress will start 9 inches from the ground. This was much lower than I was expecting. I know some people really like the low bed thing, but I'm not one of them. I'm currently looking into cheap foundations to toss between the mattress and frame, to raise the bed back to a reasonable height.

The slats only fasten on one side. I've seen a lot of people complaining about this, but it's like that for a reason. The slats are slightly curved, to support your weight. They have to be able to move slightly once you lay on them, or else they'll just break. Alternate sides, fastening the first slat on one side, the second on the other, and so forth, and you'll have a sturdy bed.

It's too big to come via FedEx or UPS. Instead, 3 very long boxes are shipped via a freight company in my case, ABF. This adds one more layer of complexity, as they require you to schedule a delivery appointment. I guess the nice thing is that you don't have to worry about them coming while you're not home.

All in all, it's a great bed. I wish a few things in the description were a little more clear (height, etc.), but I won't be sending it back by any means.

We didn't have a whole lot of money after we bought our memory foam mattress, so we were looking for a platform bed frame on a budget. This one matched the headboard from our previous full-size bed, so I decided to take a chance on it.

I ordered on December 19th, and the tracking status said it would be delivered to Philadelphia (about an hour away from us) on December 24th (Christmas Eve). This was a bit confusing, but I found out later that the shipping company, CEVA, ships to a local warehouse and makes an appointment before bringing it to your home. It wasn't until the first week of January that I received a card in the mail suggesting that I call to make an appointment.

As for the bed itself, it is, obviously, rather cheaply made.

The slats are all slightly different lengths, some slightly warped, and all splintery.

The center beam had little metal plates to receive alan bolts that went through the slats, but when you tried to screw them all in, the plates would separate from the beam. I grabbed some superglue and that seems to have fixed it (fingers crossed).

The feet on the center beam do not touch the floor.

The outside beams are as pretty as the picture, though they got a little scuffed in shipping.

This bed, by itself, is not good for a memory foam mattress. It comes with 12 3-inch slats. Considering it is 80 inches long, you can imagine how many gaps there are for your memory foam mattress to seep through and misshape itself. I had to go to Home Depot and pick up some plywood to give the mattress its needed flat surface.

The holes in the screw plate that joins headboard to side rails to footboard are oval, rather than round, so that you have to adjust the flushness of the corners to make sure the slats can reach their screw holes on the inside lip of the side rail (yes, you have to screw the slats in place, else this bed will fall apart). So without a lot of attention to detail, the corners will end up mismatching (they all cannot be flush).

Overall, this bed was a nightmare to put together. Now that it's done, it's pretty sturdy. I didn't quite anticipate how high off the ground it would be. With my 10-inch mattress and the 1/2 inch plywood it is 2 feet from the floor to the top of the mattress (I am 5'3" and my feet don't touch the ground when sitting on the edge).

I purchased this bed in CA king size for my memory foam mattress & was pleasantly surprised! It is beautiful and sturdy. No particle board. Nice espresso finished hardwood with glides pre-installed on all the legs, so it's easy to move around. Slatted platform is securely screwed to frame for stability, evenly spaced with connecting double ribbons.

Not only was it shipped fast, it was easy to transport (3 boxes) & assemble - minor issue with 2 predrilled holes not lining up (easily remedied with drill).

I assembled it upside down & flipped it over with no trouble & I'm 5'2"& a weakling.

Spectacular & cost far less than ugly plastic/metal bed foundations.

I read tons of reviews... and maybe I'm a special case but did not find any of the bad comment and reviews to be true about this bed... 1. the center legs do touch the floor and have not broken on me yet... and ive been jumping on the bed trying to prove the reviews RIGHT!!! 2. the bed is not too high/short... you can kinda of control that... if you want it to be higher, arrow up... lower, arrow down. 3. the quality of the wood is spectacular... simply beautiful... alot nicer than beds in it's price range. 4. the beams that run across the bed are meant to act together not seperately... so if you step on one trying to screw them in yes it will break. But other than watching where you step it's sturdy and finally 5. I put the bed together myself very simple instructions to follow (although I do recommend a power drill) and I'm not mechanically inclined. All in all it's a beautiful bed and I'd recommend it to anyone one a budget or just looking for somethins simple. :)
