South Shore Furniture, Cosmos Collection, Double Dresser, Black Onyx and Charcoal

South Shore Furniture, Cosmos Collection, Double Dresser, Black Onyx and CharcoalYou usually can't say this about assembled furniture but it's actually true here. The entire package is slightly lighter than its photos appear here, however you can get a clear and accurate picture of the exact colouring from the templates in the photos at the top of this page. The whole kit is VERY easy to assemble, and while its instructions recommend two people, I found this is not necessary; just like its accompanying TV stand from this collection, I assembled the entire thing by myself in just two hours, and I'm not a carpenter or handyman by any means.

Fully assembled the whole thing is VERY sturdy, although the drawer slides are made from plastic, so as with any furniture really, you should not leave a drawer open, particularly if it is very full or has much heavy stuff in it. This is my second South Shore product and it was a real pleasant find and follow-through, if I need anything more I'll definitely look at their products first.

Product took longer then would have liked for assembly but I did it by myself, drwer brakets are all plastic, wasted time looking for metal ones after opening packaging which is packaged well, everything came without defect but takes a while to sort. All braketing is rubber banded together, once assembly gets started it should be done in no time. Manual says dont place telivision on top but thats exactly what I did lol :). My 40 inch LED fits just fine and matches perfecty.

PROS:

~Looks and feels solid, matches photos

~Excellent customer service (see below)

CONS:

~Cheap, flimsy plastic drawer slides

~Low-grade particle board and cardboard parts

~Poorly written directions

~Needless abundance of parts in an attempt to compensate for poor quality

NOTES:

I've built every other piece of furniture in my home, and this is the first one that gave me any trouble, let alone got me frustrated for a while. The parts are /very/ low quality, and are not packed securely. Several of the plastic drawer slides were snapped on arrival. However, one five-minute call to customer service, and they fedexed replacements to me, free of charge.

Assembling the dresser is like pulling teeth, however. Many of the parts don't fit together well, the pre-drilling on several of the boards was inconsistently insufficient, and the directions do not help. There are far more nails and screws than necessary, and could have been all replaced by a couple of stronger supports. I assembled my primary home computer desk in the same amount of time it took to put together just ONE of the drawers for this dresser.

The exterior frame feels solid, but I'm a bit nervous about putting too much weight in any one drawer. Between the lightweight, balsa-like drawer bottoms and the plastic slides, they feel like they could fall at any moment.

Final verdict: Only buy if the price and/or color scheme are your deciding factors. Not recommended for those inexperienced with assembling furniture.

This product looks very good and was easy to assemble. Sure you have to put everything together, a lot of it is repeating though so you do not have to constantly look back at the manual if you do each step to each piece at the same time. I havn't noticed any wobbling, seriously though are you going to be pushing around your dresser to care about any wobble? All in all I love this product and I will order from this company again some time in my life time.

Update September 2012

Still nothing broken on this dresser and it survived a move to a new house with no problem. I have not needed to tighten any screws and have not experienced any of the shelves collapsing under the weight of the clothes.
